Salient Research Achievements

  • Developed methodology to identify highly vacuolated uninucleate stages in bananas and achieved production of about 20 secondary hardened putative androgenic haploids from Neypoovan.
  • Developed 422 inter-specific ornamental banana hybrids using Musa. rubra, M. acuminata subsp. zebrina, M. ornata, and M. velutina subsp. markkuana species and identified about one dozen superior hybrids possessing good ornamental traits in terms of bigger sized flower buds with attractive bract, fruit and leaf colour.
  • Associated in germplasm collection, conservation, characterization, evaluation, utilization, cataloguing and registration with ICAR-NBPGR of different fruits like banana (178 clones & 22 accessions) oil palm (152 accessions), apple (8), citrus (12), grape rootstock (11), kiwi (6), passion fruit (3), pear (5), peach (3), plum (5) and walnut (4).
  • Characterized 100 Indian Musa accessions belonging to six different genomes viz., AA (2 genotypes), BB (2), AB (6), AAA (7), AAB (47) and ABB (36) for nine elemental (Ca, K, Mg, Na, P, B, Fe, Mn, and Zn) concentrations in their fresh fruit pulp as determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES).
  • Associated in molecular characterization of banana (10 clones with 13 ISSRs), oil palm (192 accessions) and pomegranate (88 accessions) using 45 and 44 polymorphic SSRs respectively for genetic diversity studies and association mapping of horticulturally important traits.
  • Developed tissue culture technology for regeneration of banana, oil palm, Khasi mandarin and grape using different explants.
  • Associated in the processing, value addition and product developments of different fruits like bananas (≥20 products), grape (4), Khasi mandarin (3), Kokum (2), passion fruit (3), pineapple (3), Simarouba (4) and Taktir (4).
  • Associated and standardized the agro-techniques like planting time, application of organic fertilizers & lime, soil & water conservation measures for the production of Grand Naine banana in the mid-hills of Arunachal Pradesh
  • Associated in the development of five oil palm genetic stocks viz. Indian Germplasm Registration (INGR) numbers 17082, 17083, 17085 to 17087 duly notified and published by ICAR-NBPGR for their novel, unique and distinct germplasm having potential value.
  • Associated in the development of CAPS marker technology for SHELL trait to identify dura, pisifera and tenera fruit forms in oil palm and submitted in NCBI (Gene Bank accession numbers KX465097 to KX465106, KX447588 and KX363799).
  • Associated in the development and refinement of indirect somatic embryogenesis technology for oil palm and licensed it to four TC companies for Rs. 20.00 lakhs through Agrinnovate India Limited, New Delhi
  • Associated in genome-wide identification of 10 novel miRNAs for the first time using sRNA-sequencing of pomegranate with Illumina Hiseq 2000 sequencing.
  • Developed soil and water conservation technologies for growing of fruit crops on watersheds and salt affected soils.
