Dr. H.P.Singh
Dr. H.P.Singh, Deputy Director General (Horticulture) ICAR starting his career as a scientist, has contributed significantly to horticultural research, management and development and also human capital formation in his distinguished career spanning 37 years, which has earned him 3 international awards, 19 national awards and 5 fellowships including fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS). He has been recognized as a Fellow of many scientific societies. He was also conferred with life time achievement award by Horticultural Society of India and Achievers Award by All India Banana Growers’ Association. He held various positions which include Scientist, Project Co-Ordinator (fruits), Director, NRC for Banana, Horticulture Commissioner, Govt. of India, Chairman, Coconut Development Board, Dean (Agriculture), GBPUA&T, Pantnagar, Vice Chancellor, Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa and now Deputy Director General (Horticulture), ICAR. He was also Chairman of APCC, Jakarta and National Director for Internationally-Aided Project. He has been chairman of various high powered committees both at national and international level and has contributed as member secretary and member in shaping the horticulture reached and development in the country.
As a scientist, he has developed and released several varieties, technologies and products and has contributed significantly to micro-irrigation development. His outstanding contributions are in genetic resource management of perennial horticulture, development of cultivars and production system based technologies, nutrient and water management and fruit biotechnology. He is instrumental in promotion of efficient water management and providing boost to micro-irrigation and fertigation. Hi-tech horticulture and precision farming was conceptualized and executed by him. He has been at centre stage in the promotion of organic farming. He has provided new dimensions to horticultural development by conceptualizing and executing the mission mode approach for horticultural development. His contribution as an academician also created an impact on agricultural education. The efforts of Dr. Singh have provided a strong foundation for horticultural development, leading to Golden Revolution.
Dr. Singh has excelled whatever position he held. Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa received appreciation of transformation, college of agriculture, GBPUT got accreditation and received appreciation or high stream of students and facilities during his period. Coconut Development Board got international recognition and many awards during his tenure. NRC for Banana got appreciation of INIBAP and AICRP on fruits excelled during his period in terms of technical contents and output. As a scientist, he is credited to have developed and released 3 cultivars, one each in litchi, passion fruit and acid lime. He has facilitated the development of 4 varieties in citrus, 5 varieties of Banana, 4 varieties of sapota and 2 varieties of pine apple. Five varieties selected by him in Banana have excelled in performance. He is credited to have conceptualized and implemented precision farming in horticulture. Dr. Singh has also provided leadership in horticultural research and development having vision, commitment and direction. Now, he is providing leadership to national horticulture as Deputy Director General (Horticulture) ICAR, New Delhi.
He was conferred “Shivashakthi Lifetime Achievement Award – 2007” by horticultural Society of India, during the 3rd Indian Horticultural Congress, at Bhubaneshwar on 6th November, 2008 for his outstanding contribution to horticultural research and development in India, and “Lifetime Achievement Award” by AIPUB for his contribution to horticultural research and development with special reference to Banana during the International Conference on Banana at Trichy on 24th October, 2008. Bioversity International, France & BAPNET, Philippines conferred a “Plaque of Recognition” to him for outstanding leadership in Banana research and development on 22nd October, 2008, at Trichy, India. Dr. Singh holds the position like president, general secretary and member of several professional societies, and has been instrumental in organizing several national (80) and international (10) conferences. Dr. Singh is credited to have authored and edited 38 books and 26 bulletins, 60 technical reports besides 175 research papers. He has widely travelled in India and abroad.
