The ICAR-National Research Centre for Banana, Tiruchirapalli organized ten days High-End Workshop (Karyashala) on “Recent advances in Banana improvement, production, protection, PHT, extension, and business arena for nutritional security in the era of Atmanirbhar Bharat” during 17-26 September 2022. The programme was funded by DST- Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), New Delhi. The workshop was specifically designed for Post-Graduate and Ph. D students to expose them to contemporary technological advancements. 31M.Sc&Ph.D research scholars from 6 states of the country were provided with a capacity development programme on Banana Science. The valedictory session of the training program was held on 26 September 2022.Delivering the presidential address, Dr. (Mrs.) S. Uma, Director, ICAR-NRCB, Tiruchirappalli underlined that research and development brought sea changes in technological advancements.ICAR aims at empowering the younger generation with advanced research technologies, she added. Dr. S. Uma exhorted that taking the advancement in science to the younger generation is the need of the hour. In this context, the present ten days workshop conceptualized to provide hands-on training to the research scholars about the recent development. Delivering the Chief guest address, Dr.Nicolas Roux, Team Leader, Bioversity International, France emphasized the various opportunities available for scholars in crop research and development at the global level. Further, he mentioned the opportunities for research scholars in the Consultative Group for International Agricultural ResearchCGIAR. He said that the collaborative programme with an international organization shall provide opportunities for the doctoral and post-doctoral programme to work as research scholars in the renowned international organization. In this context, ICAR-NRCB correctly identified the HRD area in which the students have to be trained. Dr. C. Karpagam, Course Director and Principal Scientist (Agricultural Extension), NRCB, mentioned that the major objective of any extension programme is taking the technologies from lab to land for the benefit of different stakeholders to form a greater linkage among the Research-Extension-Client (R-E-C) system. The 10 days course has been developed with different modules viz., banana improvement, production, protection, PHT, extension and business opportunity available in the banana production system. Hands-on training, and interactive lecture by scientists of NRCB and other ICAR Institutions, TNAU, VIT Vellore, and Xanthus Institute of Goa, formed part of the training. Field visits to the Thottiam banana producer group and banana farmers’ field have also formed part of the training programme. Dr. M. MayilVaganan, Principal Scientist, NRCB welcome the participants, and a Vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. A. Mohanasundaram, Senior Scientist & Organising Secretary of the programme.
