The ICAR-National Research Centre for Banana (NRCB), in collaboration with Isha Outreach’s Save Soil Movement, successfully organized the “Life-Enriching Banana Festival” on November 24, 2024. The event was held at SCAD College of Engineering and Technology, Cheranmahadevi, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. The festival showcased the vast diversity of banana varieties and value-added products, drawing an enthusiastic participation of over 2,000 farmers and stakeholders, while reaching more than 1 lakh people through extensive social media engagement and wide-ranging media coverage. Dr. R. Selvarajan, Director of ICAR-NRCB, inaugurated the festival. In his Chief Guest address, he highlighted the cultural, socio-economic, and geographical significance of bananas in India. He emphasized the transformative potential of value addition in banana production. Sharing insights into NRCB’s groundbreaking technologies, he encouraged farmers to explore profitable avenues such as extracting juice from banana stems, which has significant commercial potential. He also elaborated on NRCB’s contributions to banana research, including innovative technologies that promote sustainable farming, value chain enhancement, and entrepreneurship development. He highlighted the importance of soil health and organic carbon content in the productivity of banana. The event featured an impressive display of around 50 banana varieties, each showcasing unique traits such as high levels of carotenoids, minerals, iron, resistant starch, medicinal properties, and distinct flavors. GI-tagged bananas like Matti, Sirumalai, and Virupakshi were among the highlights, underscoring the geographical and cultural heritage of these varieties. Additionally, over 50 value-added banana products were exhibited, demonstrating the fruit's versatility and wide-ranging economic potential. From banana-based snacks and beverages to fiber-based eco-products, the exhibits illustrated opportunities for farmers, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders to tap into value-added markets. ICAR-NRCB presented a range of cutting-edge technologies aimed at empowering farmers, stakeholders, and entrepreneurs. The festival featured insightful lectures by NRCB scientists, including Dr. C. Karpagam, Dr. K.J. Jeyabaskaran, Dr. P. Suresh Kumar. The collaboration between ICAR-NRCB and Isha Outreach underscored the shared commitment to empowering the farming community and promoting the Save Soil Movement's vision of sustainable soil and agricultural health.
