Valedictory programme of Swachhata Pakhwada and New year celebrations on 01-01-2025
The ICAR-National Research Centre for Banana (ICAR-NRCB), Tiruchirappalli, actively organized the Swachhata Pakhwada from December 16 to 31, 2024, promoting cleanliness, environmental sustainability, and public awareness.
The program commenced on December 16, 2024, with the Swachhata Pledge, during which all staff reaffirmed their commitment to cleanliness. Banners promoting the initiative were displayed prominently across the institute, including the research farm and residential complex. Director, Dr. R. Selvarajan emphasized the importance of spreading the message of cleanliness to homes and communities. On December 17, 2024, an awareness session educated participants on converting banana waste into vermicompost and managing biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. Between December 18 and 19, 2024, administrative activities such as digitizing office records, implementing e-office systems, and disposing of scrap materials. Additionally, cleanliness drives were carried out in the Director’s office, corridors, and training hostel areas.
On December 20, 2024, a plantation drive was inaugurated by Dr. R. Selvarajan, introducing the Miyawaki forest concept to enhance biodiversity. Under this initiative, 80 plants from 18 native species were planted, including neem, vengai, tamarind, poovarasu, jamun, teak, guava, rosewood, amla, jackfruit, Ixora sp., jasmine, hibiscus, bougainvillea, mango, moringa, senbagam, and Ficus panda. The drive saw active participation from permanent staff, project staff, and trainees from various parts of the country. Dr. G. Prabhu, Senior Scientist and his team, coordinated this program.
On December 21 and 22, 2024, cleaning campaigns enhanced hygiene in NRCB residential colonies, marketplaces, and public spaces. The institute celebrated Kisan Diwas on December 23, 2024, with a Banana Festival attended by over 600 stakeholders, including farmers and entrepreneurs. The Hon’ble DDG (Horticulture), Dr. Sanjay Kumar Singh, was the chief guest. Key events were inauguration of Common Incubation Centre and Trainees’ Hostel, launching an e-commerce platform, International society for bananas and plantation, and distributing tissue culture plants. Drs. C. Karpagam, P. Sureshkumar, and A. Mohanasundaram were organizing secretaries of the program.
On December 24, 2024, creative activities including a drawing and painting competition on “Swachh Bharat” themes were organized. These activities were conducted in three categories, i.e., ICAR-NRCB staff and their family members (9 participants), Children aged 5–10 years (7 participants), and Children aged 11–15 years (8 participants). The subtopics were Pollution-Free India and Clean Earth – Innovative Ideas. Participants created meaningful and creative drawings, reflecting the theme of Swachh Bharat. Mrs. T. AnithaSree, ACTO and her team, coordinated this programme.
On December 25 and 26, 2024, a signature campaign mobilized stakeholders to support Swachhata activities. Staff also initiated kitchen gardens to promote wastewater recycling and organic vegetable cultivation. From December 27 to 28, 2024, public awareness drives including cleanliness campaigns at Thekkadi and the Mayanur Barrage Right Canal, improving water flow and ecological health while contributing to the Swachh Bharat Mission.
On December 29, 2024, the institute organized a Swachhata rally and a human chain to promote cleanliness. On December 30, 2024, as part of its involvement in print and electronic media, details of the Swachhata Pakhwada activities were collected. The event garnered extensive participation from both print and electronic media, resulting in widespread publicity. Reports on the Swachhata Pakhwada activities were published in leading newspapers and media outlets, including The Hindu, Dinamani,The Hindu Tamil, The Times News Network, Dinamalar, The New Indian Express, and Dinakaran.
The concluding session of Swachhata Pakhwada 2024 was conducted on January 1, 2025. Dr. T. P. Rajendran, Former ADG (Plant Protection), was the chief guest of the function. He emphasized the use of steel water bottles, jute bags, and tumblers instead of plastic bottles, polythene bags, and wax-coated paper cups. In his presidential address, Dr. R. Selvarajan, Director of ICAR-NRCB, appreciated the activities conducted during Swachhata Pakhwada 2024. Dr. A. Mohanasundaram, Senior Scientist and Nodal Officer of the Swachhata Bharat Mission, highlighted the various activities held from December 16 to 31, 2024. During Swachhata Pakhwada 2024, Swachhata Bharat Mission team has organised drawing and painting competition for various categories; the prices were distributed for the winners further more certificates were distributed to participants of Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen Phase II – Quiz.
Various coordinators from the ICAR-NRCB staff successfully conducted each activity of the Swachhata Pakhwada held from 16th to 31st December, 2024. These activities were coordinated by Dr. A. Mohanasundaram, Senior Scientist, Nodal Officer Swachhata Bharat Mission. The initiative underscored the institute’s commitment to cleanliness, innovation, and community-driven sustainable development.
