Empowering Kolli Hills Women Tribal Farmers through ICAR-NRCB’s Hi-Tech Banana Cultivation and Value Addition Training Programme from 12-14 March 2025

The ICAR - National Research Centre for Banana (ICAR-NRCB), Tiruchirappalli, successfully conducted a training programme from 12-14 March 2025 aimed at enhancing the agricultural knowledge and skills of 25 women tribal farmers from Kolli Hills, Namakkal district, Tamil Nadu. The programme focused on advanced techniques in hi-tech banana cultivation and value addition. During the three-day training, ICAR-NRCB experts provided a comprehensive hands-on demonstration, and field exposure. Key topics included scientific banana cultivation, integrated pest and disease management, post-harvest technologies, value addition, and export opportunities, government schemes and financial support, integrated farming systems. Special emphasis was placed on banana value addition to enhance product quality and marketability. Field visits were organized to ICAR-NRCB’s research farm, where farmers observed advanced techniques such as germplasm diversity, clump management, drone-based farm monitoring, and automatic irrigation systems. Additionally, a visit to the Thottiyam Banana Grower Federation FPO provided insights into successful agri-business models and value chain opportunities. The farmers expressed the need for more hands-on training. In response, ICAR-NRCB's Director, Dr. R. Selvarajan, assured that a separate hands-on training programme would be organized for banana stem juice preparation, banana fibre-based products, and banana value addition. At the valedictory session, certificates were awarded to all participants, and tissue culture plants of the Manoranjitham variety were distributed free of cost to promote the conservation of this unique banana variety in Kolli Hills. To facilitate ongoing communication and support, a dedicated WhatsApp group was created for the farmers to interact with the scientists. The training programme was meticulously coordinated by Dr. R. Selvarajan, Director, ICAR- NRCB, and Dr. C. Karpagam, Principal Scientist (Agricultural Extension), with support from a team of distinguished scientists and technical experts. By equipping farmers with scientific knowledge and modern technologies, this initiative marks a significant step toward enhancing productivity, improving livelihoods, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices in Kolli Hills.
