The International Women’s Day was celebrated with full enthusiasm at the National Research Centre for Banana, Tiruchirappalli. Both women and men staff from categories including farm staff and students from the Horticulture College & Research Institute for Women, Navalur Kuttappattu have took part in various activities of the program.
In her Women’s Day message Dr. S. Uma, Director, NRCB addressed the gathering with International Women’s Day 2020 theme “Each for Equality”. She emphasized women should be empowered, bold enough to face the problems and should have equal opportunities in all spheres of life. She also appreciated outperformance of girl students in all disciplines especially in the field of agriculture which was very negligible three decades back.
Dr. Bhimaraya Metri, Director, IIM, Trichy in his Chief Guest address highlighted successful administrators at the National and International level. He proudly mentioned about the successful bench mark set by the IIM, Trichy by admitting girl students for more than 50 per cent of the total seats in the past three years that showed way for the rest of the IIMs in the country.
Mrs. Snehalatha Johnson, DGM, Canara Bank spoke about the leadership qualities of the women and she also stressed upon the importance of sharing the responsibility and mutual support of both men and women for the betterment of the family and the society as well. Senior Advocate Smt. T. Banumathi spoke about the suppression and inequality being meted out to women on the basis of religious faith and emphasized that there is need for strict implementation of equality by giving equal opportunity in all aspects of life such education, employment and sharing and owning of wealth and administrative power foe the women.
Dr. K. Uma Maheswari, Dean SASH, SASTRA, Thanjavur stated that there are number of successful women who faced hardships initially but with their determination and hard work they have succeeded and made bigger achievements in all fields including business and entrepreneurship. She also quoted the example of Ms Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, who studied fermentation technology in Australia, started her business in a small scale and made great success with diversified activities and products. She also urged the gathering the importance of not giving up their fight against any discrimination towards women.
Later, the staff of the Centre spoke about the sacrifices and successful role of women at home, office and public life as well. The college students headed by Dr. V. P. Santhi, HC&RI, (W), eagerly participated and exhibited their talents with varieties of cultural performances. Dr. D. Ramajeyam made arrangements for the Women’s Day Celebrations, Ms. Mahalakshmi welcomed the gathering and Dr. M.S. Saraswathi proposed vote of thanks.
