The ICAR-National Research Centre for Banana Trichy celebrated “National Science Day” with an objective to expose the recent developments in agricultural research particularly in banana and to create an awareness and motivation among the students of various schools in Trichy and Karur Districts on 29th February, 2016. On this day, the research centre was open to the students to show-case the research activities of the Institute and also interaction with the scientists and researchers to motivate the students on the opportunities available in horticulture and agriculture as career. The research centre made elaborate arrangements to display the advanced technologies developed on various aspects of banana production.
In this function, around 350 students from different schools in Trichy and Karur districts participated. The NRCB Scientists/ Technical Officers explained the various research activities of the centre like banana varieties, tissue culture techniques, soil management, bunch sleeving, eco-friendly and biocontrol methods for managing insect pests, nematodes, fungal and viral diseases. Samples of value added banana products prepared at NRCB were given to all students and very good response was noticed among the visitors.
Dr. B. Padmanaban, Director, ICAR - NRCB inaugurated the function and gave presidential address. In his address, he outlined lucrative career opportunities available in agriculture and allied sectors and invited all the students to visit the ICAR - NRCB at any time.
