ICAR – National Research Centre for Banana, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu and ICAR-KVK Karur jointly organized a farmers meet to celebrate the World Pulse Day. Three events have been earmarked for the function viz., World Pulse Day, Kela Mela with Exhibition and the Training programme. The programme has been arranged at Kottaimedu village of Kulithalai block of Karur district. Dr. S. Uma, Director, ICAR-NRCB, Tiruchirappalli delivered a talk on importance of pulses and banana and their role in human health and development. She emphasized the importance of the value-added products in both through improved value chain. The technical and cultivation aspects of pulses and banana have been discussed by Drs. K. J. Jeyabaskaran, M. Loganathan and Tamilselvi in lucid manner. Dr. C. Karpagam, Principal Scientist (Agricultural Extension) and the programme coordinator has explained about the scope of banana cultivation with the pulses as inter crops in doubling the farmers’ income. Dr. K. Thiravium, Head, KVK briefed the coordination of the research centre, KVK and agriculture department in promotion of pulses for nutritional and health security in the country. The tag line of the commemoration of the programme that “Pulse to empower youth in achieving sustainable agri-food system” was popularized among the participants. To create more awareness about the pulses, various dishes made out of pulses were served to the participants.
