MGMG Programme - III at Thirumanamedu & Kondaiyampettai on 21.07.2016

Dr.R.Selvarajan interacting with the farmers

We, the MGMG-Team-III members, Dr.R.Selvarajan, Dr.K.J.Jeyabaskaran, Dr.C.Anuradha and Dr.P.Giribabu visited Thirumanamedu and Kondaiyampettai villages on 21.7.2016. At Thirumanamedu village, we visited banana fields and collected soil samples for issuing of soil health cards. Detrimental effects of indiscriminate application of fertilisers in agricultural lands were explained to the farmers. Sufficient knowledge on soil test based fertiliser management was imparted among the farmers. Proper suggestions on banana corm rot, weed management and intercropping in banana fields were given to farmers. We identified Mr. Annamalai, Mr. Baskar, Mr.Rajendran, Mr.Madhiyazhagan as progressive farmers in Thirumanamedu village. The farmers felt very happy about our visit to their village and assured to extend their cooperation in our MGMG activities in their village. On the way back to our Centre, we visited the Kondiyampettai village, where the progressive farmer Mr. Chinnadurai arranged a farmers' meet. We participated in this farmers' meet (50 farmers) and delivered talks on 'soil and nutrient management in banana cultivation', 'identification of nutrient deficiency symptoms and their remedial measures in banana', 'fungal-bacterial-virus disease management in banana', 'nematode management in banana'. During these presentations, suitable extension tools like flexi-banners depicting relevant photographs and management practices were used. We discussed about the advantages of farmers' producer company. The farmers were asked to contact the Mr. Karikalan, who is running a farmers' producer company successfully at Nachchalur, Karur Dt. for further information. This farmers' meet happened to be an 'eye-opener' for avoiding indiscriminate usage of agricultural inputs like complex fertilisers, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides etc. At the end of this meeting, It was realised from the feedback from these farmers that they are 'technically supported' in their agricultural activities by our MGMG activities. This farmers' meet paved way for us to develop good rapport with residents of Kondaiyampettai village.
