ICAR - NRC BANANA, TRICHY conducted a Regional Workshop on Centralised Agricultural Research Data Management on 25-03-2019


A workshop on ICAR- KRISHI Portal: A Central Research Data Repository was organized at ICAR- NRC Banana (NRCB) on 25th March 2019 jointly with ICAR- Indian Agricultural Statistical Research Institute (IASRI) as first of its kind in the southern states. Dignitaries from Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi and State Agricultural Universities attended the meeting. Dr. K. Alagusunadram, Deputy Director General (Agricultural Engineering/Natural Resource Management), ICAR, New Delhi was the Chief Guest and in his address, he emphasized on the importance of data repository in ICAR and ICAR’s initiative of Knowledge based Resources Information system hub for Innovation in Agriculture (KRISHI) for making the information and knowledge resources in one place for the public access. Dr. S.K. Chaudhari, Assistant Director General (Soil and Water Management), ICAR, New Delhi elaborated the genesis of the KRISHI PORTAL project, how it has changed its vision since 2014 to become the world’s most vibrant data repository of agricultural information, where from research (meta) data to geo-portal, all the technologies, success stories and audios/videos are available at one place as an open access to wide spectrum of clienteles. Dr. S. Uma, Director of the Institute, urged the participants for change in attitude and open up the mind to share the data and technologies to farmers, fellow researchers and various other stake-holders. She insisted that transforming data into knowledge is essential in the era of Artificial Intelligence and big data analysis. Dr. Prakash Patil, Project Coordinator, All India Coordinated Research Project on Fruits (AICRP-F), with more than 70 network centers, involved in fruit research, having a common platform to bring all the data, synthesizing it are essential for drawing meaningful conclusion from the projects. Dr. Rajendra Parsad, Principal Investigator of the KRISHI Portal, IASRI, New Delhi briefed the house that in the last three years more than four lakh downloads have been taken place through this portal with maximum retrieval of data from overseas stakeholders. Under NARS (ICAR institutes and State Agricultural Universities), KRISHI Portal will be the most dynamic and vibrant portal for the agricultural research. More than 60 participants from all the southern states have participated in the workshop to learn the hands on experience on the data management through the web portal. In this occasion, NRCB received “A Special Appreciation Certificate” from ICAR, New Delhi for the effective management of data repository in KRISHI portal. Dr. R. Selvarajan, Principal Scientist and Nodal Officer, KRISHI Portal, NRCB welcomed the gathering and Dr. Mukesh Kumar, IASRI, New Delhi proposed the vote of thanks.
